Dear neighbors,
I am writing with some personal news today, that I have been selected as a J. William Fulbright Scholar for next year. The Fulbright Scholarship program is a diplomatic initiative of the U.S. State Department that aims to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” I was granted a position in China next year, teaching American Studies to Chinese university students. My sons Graham and Emmett will accompany me and study in China next year, and my partner Fred Lane will join us for most of the year. As you can imagine, we are very excited about our adventure ahead.
I am saddened however that this will necessitate my resignation from the Burlington School Board. I will forward details and dates regarding the special election that will be held to fill my seat as soon as they are resolved. In the meantime, I will maintain my seat, and am happy to respond to any constituent concerns.
I can definitely say that I will miss working with my colleagues at the Burlington School District, and representing our wonderful, tight-knit Ward 5 community. It has been a hard and rewarding pleasure.
Wishing you dry basements and blossoming tulips,
Amy Werbel
